Dangerous? by shadowlight-oak Dangerous? by shadowlight-oak
I hate this stereotype...

The truth is that, as a group, mentally ill people are no more violent than any other group. In fact, they are far more likely to be the victims of violence than to be violent themselves.

(p.s. don't worry it's food colouring not blood)

I am schizophrenic, and when i am having a relapse then i can be realy dangerous, but when im okay i am the total opposite! i would never even hurt a fly! everyone stereotypes me, they say "oh i wouldn't let you loose with wepons" and "keep the dangerous stuff out of her way" it realy annoys me! and your right with the fact that we are more likely to be the victims, every day at school i am a victim of bullying, and half the time violence, the think its funny, and they think we are easy targets because we are "not right in the head" i also hate it when people say that! by them saying that then it just makes them not right in the head! people bully the mentaly ill, they shouldn't... its an illness just like any other! they wouldnt bully someone with cancer! so why us?!

I agree. I mean mentally ill aren't more dangerous than sane and should't be put into lifelong hospitals for no real purpose.

Technically, I qualify for sociopathy. And I'm not going to lie, I consider myself a little dangerous. ;P

I agree with you, though. Assuming mentally ill people are violent is just wrong.

i try not to tell ppl but sometimes im proud of it. you have to own your disorder before it owns you. i had to learn that the hard way. Im a naturaly angry person so when i am angry, i am usualy more threatening than the guy across the street with the shot gun.

I agree, I also hate people who think just because you have a mental illness your dumb and or dangerous. I am less dangerous than the kid who started a fight just because someone poked him, yet I know if anyone found out about my mental illnesses they'd tag me as dangerous. Yes sometimes I can be more dangerous than the normal person but overall...

I am mentally ill and, unfortunately, I can be very dangerous. It's a stupid stereotype because not everyone who's mentally ill is dangerous. I can't tell you what I did because it's against the advice of my lawyer. Usually I'm only a danger to myself (I've attempted suicide seven times) but recently, because the voices have gotten stronger, I've become a danger to others as well. I hate how I have to follow everything the faeries tell me or else they'll take me away. I could have gone to jail for what I did or thrown back in a state hospital and tied down to a bed like usual, but somehow I got out of it.

..let me chime in on this...I'm ill..and only have a couple of bodies
in the back room!
..ya it's sad..I have a dual disability..alcohol and chronic depression.
I just finished treatment for the one and will take meds for the rest of my life for the other.
I'm used to the talk and attitude among those "unenlightened". I guess it can be my mission
while hear to give them a gentle nudge to the truth about this misunderstood topic and
reality we live with!;p

The alcohol I can semi relate to, I used to have a bit of a problem with it, and over the last few weeks have been relapsing a bit (trying to "nip it in the bud"). Depression I have no firsthand experiance with, I personally have DID and EDNOS, EDNOS people can cope with but the second they hear about the DID their brain goes to certain horror/thriller movies where the murderer has DID *sighs* and so decide that I must have a murderous alter too - which we don't. It really gets fustrating

You know..I need to read about what DID and EDNOS
your suffering from..new to me.. :)
I self medicated with alcohol, crack, on and on for the last 20 years up until March of this year. I'll stick to this sober life for awhile!;p
Thanks so much for sharing this with me!

Well, there are some metal illnesses that do make you a dangerous individual. But there are far more mental illnesses that are not dangerous, and often sometimes dangerous to the individual, and no one else. Personally, I think I'm developing some form of anxiety.. I'm not sure of that. I know few people who have mental illnesses, one of them dangerous, but that has nothing to do with what he has.

I hate it whenever they say that we're violent. It annoys me to no end.
I especially dislike how whenever there is a murder or crime on the news they mention if they had a mental illness history, are mentally ill or not. This just shows that they expect us to and are just spreading the stigma around for the rest of us. >_<
